Artist Statement

I compose to express what I am otherwise unable to access. The process of composition is an emotional excavation, the music revealing layer upon layer of subconscious sediment and buried gems. Informed by the experience of growing up with a brother with profound intellectual and physical disability, I am especially interested in excavating hidden experiences relating to disability. For example, with foundations like Sing Me a Story and Hear Your Song, I have written music representing the experiences of children with severe illnesses. The opera I am composing is about Melusina, a medieval woman whose family curse marginalizes her much as a disability would. Through an idiosyncratic yet lyrical and direct compositional voice, I invite listeners into their own excavations.
